■ Achieved Gold ZWTL Validation from UL Solutions for the second energy plant in Yeosu
■ Recognized for efforts in waste recycling and achievements in energy plants by the global certification organization for safety and the environment
■ “Kumho Petrochemical will join the creation of a circular economy based on the waste reduction plan,” said Nam Jeong-woo, Head of the EHS Planning Office
On November 2nd, Kumho Petrochemical (CEO Baek Jong-hoon) announced that its second energy plant in Yeosu had achieved the Gold Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) Validation from Underwriter Laboratories (UL) Solutions, a global certification organization for safety and the environment.
UL Solutions’ “ZWTL” Validation is an international index that evaluates companies’ efforts to recycle resources. It is divided into three grades based on the plants’ waste recycling rate: Platinum (100%), Gold (95%–99%), and Silver (90%–94%).
Kumho Petrochemical’s second energy plant in Yeosu achieved a 97% recycling rate last year by recycling 95,836 t of generated waste, among a total of 98,315 t. One method applied was recycling combustion ash generated from boilers in power plants as raw materials for cement.
Starting with the second energy plant’s Gold ZWTL Validation, Kumho Petrochemical plans to apply the method to 10 other plants sequentially and further strengthen its eco-friendly management.
“Kumho Petrochemical will join the creation of a circular economy based on the waste reduction plan,” Nam Jeong-woo, Head of the EHS Planning Office, said. “The company will double its efforts to expand recycling processes in all plants.”
